Kona International Airport sits at Keahole Point, about 7 miles north of Kailua-Kona along the rugged lava coast of the Big Island. Officially named the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, it was renamed in 2017 to honor Ellison Onizuka, a Big Island native from Kealakekua who became NASA's first Asian American astronaut. Onizuka died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. The visitor information station on Mauna Kea, where the free public stargazing program runs, is also named the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy in his honor.
The airport is one of the few open-air terminals in the United States. There are no enclosed concourses. Arriving passengers step off the plane and walk through open-air walkways with trade winds and mountain views. It is a fitting introduction to the Big Island.
KOA serves as the main gateway to the Kona side of the island, with direct flights from the mainland on United, American, Alaska, and Hawaiian Airlines. Most resorts, rental homes, and attractions on the west side of the island are within 30 to 45 minutes of the airport.
